BMW 325 1997

General description : Model History

The E36 3-Series was sold from 1991 to 1999. It was the successor to the E30 and was replaced by the E46 3-Series in 1998. This third generation of 3-Series was a very popular one. Its new design featured improved aerodynamics and featured the “Z-axle” multilink rear suspension, which had been proven in the Z1.

Although larger and heavier than the E30 – due to more active safety features being fitted – The E36 boasted a perfect 50:50 weight distribution; this was achieved by relocating the engine further back.

The 328i Sport was released in 1996. The two-door rear-wheel drive coupé was fitted with BMW’s sublime M52 2.8-litre straight-six engine. Like the M3, the Sport was developed in conjunction with BMW's high performance M Division. It boasted aerodynamic M body styling, M-tuned sports suspension, 17-inch BBS rims, twin exhaust tailpipes, and sports seats. The 2.8 was also the largest 3-series engine below that of the M3, offering a 0-60 time of 7.3 seconds when paired with the desirable manual gearbox.

Exterior

The eye-catching Hellrot paint is in fantastic condition all round. The gleaming bodywork presents with a deep shine, free from any unsightly dents or scratches. There are almost no stone chips to the front end and all the lights are crystal clear and without any moisture damage. Even smaller details such as the window rubbers and badges appear as new throughout. All in all, this cherished example is one of the cleanest E36’s we’ve seen here at 4 Star.

Interior

Opening the door you’re presented with smart black leather upholstery. The supportive Sports seats still feel textured and soft, the leather remaining in excellent condition with no damage or wear to be found. Finer details such as the gear knob and front central armrest also show few signs of use. Looking closer, the interior surfaces still appear very fresh and are completely free from any fading or damage. All of the switchgear is solid to operate and the electrics are working exactly as they should.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Lifting the bonnet is a real treat for the enthusiast. The engine bay is extremely clean and well presented with absolutely no signs of any damage or poor repair. All of the plastic components still appear factory-fresh and the inner panels retain an impeccable painted finish. The 328i’s wonderful M52 straight-six has been well maintained throughout its life and was most recently serviced just 200 miles ago in September 2018. The five-speed manual ‘box is a perfect accompaniment allowing for smooth and precise gear changes.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The 328i Sport’s stunning two-piece rims look incredible, each one retaining a perfect, unblemished appearance. Polished alloys such as this are susceptible to cloudiness and lacquer damage but these have clearly never seen a salted road; even the centre badges appear as new. The wheels are wrapped in a matching set of Pirelli Cinturato P7 tyres all with at least 6mm of tread remaining. Between the spokes the calipers present well and the discs have plenty of meat left.

History File

Supplied new by Cronk of Chipstead this 328i Sport was first registered in March 1997. The History File is complete with a raft of maintenance invoices, all handbooks and an original 3-Series sales brochure. The dealer-supplied maintenance booklet is stamped up to date – the most recent service being in September 2018 just 200 miles ago – and there are plenty of MOT certificates to further verify the low mileage of 71k.

Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
