Interior
The black vinyl upholstery presents in excellent wear-free condition. The same can also be said for the rest of the cabin which is very nicely appointed. The carpets are absolutely spotless and even the glossy wooden fascia panel is unmarked. Fitted as standard with electric windows the car further benefits from a modern MP3 head unit with Pioneer door speakers. Finer details such as the steering wheel and gear knob are also perfect.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
A real treat for any classic Lotus enthusiast the engine bay looks superb. Both the engine and gearbox have been fully rebuilt with a new clutch fitted and a bespoke exhaust system; all mounted to a brand new chassis everything looks top notch. With a little choke she starts first turn of the key and idles smoothly up to temperature.
History File
A reluctant sale by the current owner, whose late father purchased the car way back in the early seventies, this striking French Blue S2 Europa has just arrived into stock following a detailed mechanical and cosmetic refresh.
Restoration work began in early 2021 with a £3,405 strip down and general prep of the car by Tiger Racing in Cambridgeshire. The original 1.5-litre Renault engine and 336 gearbox were then sent away for a complete overhaul and rebuild by two independent specialists, this work amounting to £3,785. A glass-out repaint was then carried out by Tiger Racing at a cost of £6,975. Spyder Cars then completed a ground-up rebuild with all-new parts including a new spaceframe chassis, a double wishbone rear suspension and driveshaft conversion, new front suspension and brakes all round – the invoice for this work totalling an eye-watering £10,650. The entire car was then put back together by Tiger Racing with new upholstery and carpets, etc. – another £4,000. A final £1,577 shakedown of the Europa was completed in November 2023 when a new carburettor was fitted and a full dyno tune was carried out to address any running-in snags.
A limited amount of paperwork accompanies the Lotus but the condition really speaks for itself. An original Europa workshop manual is pleasingly still on file along with recent restoration invoices for the £30k+ expenditure. There is also a date of manufacture letter from Lotus Cars along with the V5C showing only 1 former keeper.
1971 Lotus Europa S2 is listed for sale on ClassicDigest in Hampshire by 4Star Classics for £21995.
