Volkswagen Golf Mk1 Clipper 1992

General description : Model History

The Mk1 VW Golf was noteworthy for signalling Volkswagen’s shift of its major car lines from rear-wheel drive and rear-mounted air-cooled engines to front-wheel drive with front-mounted, water-cooled engines that were often transversely-mounted. Successor to the VW Beetle, the first generation Golf debuted in Europe in May 1974 with styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Italdesign.

A convertible version of the Golf was presented to Volkswagen's management by coachbuilder Wilhelm Karmann GmbH as early as 1976. The production version of the convertible Golf was designated Type 155. In Europe and Canada it was called the Golf Cabriolet, while in the United States it was sold as the Rabbit Convertible until the 1985 model year. The Cabriolet was sold from 1980 to 1994. It had a reinforced body, a transverse roll-over bar, and a high level of trim. From stamping to final assembly the Mk1 Cabriolet was built entirely at the Karmann factory. Volkswagen supplied engines, suspension, and interior trim for Karmann to install. The tops, of vinyl or cloth, were heavily insulated, with a heated glass rear window. The top was raised and lowered manually until 1991, when it became electrically-operated.

The body of the Cabriolet did not change through the entire production run except for a larger fuel tank. It kept the pre-1980 style of rear lamp clusters. A space saver spare wheel was fitted from the outset, including 1978 pre-production models, unlike the saloon which did not adopt this until 1984. All Cabriolets from 1988 on left the factory fitted with a “Clipper” bodykit that featured smooth body-coloured bumpers, wheel-arch extensions, and side skirts.

Exterior

This stunning and surely unrepeatable example has been cherished from new, and with a mere 27k miles on the clock it’s also one of the cleanest Mk1 Golfs we’ve seen. The timeless Alpine White paintwork appears almost entirely unmarked, with a bright and uniform shine across every panel. The bumpers, wheel arch extensions, and rubbing strips are all in excellent, scuff-free condition, and the factory ‘Clipper’ decals are still present and correct. Up top, the electric-folding hood is absolutely pristine with no damage, rips, or unsightly creases. With a super clean underside and the original supplying dealer number plates still fitted, this beautifully preserved example is one for a true enthusiast.

Interior

The classic Mk1 cabin appears fresh throughout. The unmarked sports seats are in first rate condition with no wear to report, even to commonly worn areas such as the driver’s bolster. The pristine cloth upholstery presents with a delightful multicoloured weave on close inspection, this fabric extending to the door and side panels, again all completely unscathed. The white headlining is entirely mark-free, the dash fascia is perfect, and all controls work just as they should, including the electric-folding hood. In the front footwells the carpets are protected by a set of rubber VW overmats. Truly time warp in every respect, this magnificent example looks every bit the low mileage of 27k.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The peppy 1.8 produces 90hp and is still lovely and smooth, giving excellent and reliable performance along the way. Equipped with the desirable manual gearbox it’s a hugely enjoyable car to drive. The cambelt has very recently been replaced and since arriving at 4 Star the car has been fully inspected and freshly serviced ready for the new keeper to enjoy. The workshop were particularly impressed with the outstanding condition of the engine bay and underside, the car clearly having been properly garaged all its life.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Clipper sits on 15-inch ‘Le Castellet’ forged alloys, each with a striking polished finish. The wheels are wrapped in a matching set of tyres, all with at least 6mm of tread remaining. The brakes have also been checked and are in fine operational condition. In fact, the current owner has had the front discs, pads, rear drums and shoes all replaced within the last few hundred miles.

History File

The fantastic little Golf was first registered in November 1992. It was supplied new by Sinclair Garages Volkswagen in Swansea; pleasingly the original dealer window sticker and number plates are all still present with the car. It remained a one-owner example right up until 2017 when it was purchased by the current keeper.

Within the History File you’ll find the original VW document pack complete with all owner’s manuals, the stamped service booklet, a raft of invoices, past MOT certificates, and the spare key. The car has just been serviced and fully inspected for the new keeper’s peace of mind. Additionally, brilliant parts availability, owners club support, and mechanical simplicity offer worry-free classic car motoring allowing the next owner to concentrate solely on enjoyment.

About Volkswagen
The Volkswagen story is indeed an intriguing tale of innovation, resilience, and post-war revival, marked by various models that have become iconic in automotive history.

The People's Car (Volkswagen): Initially envisioned by Adolf Hitler in the 1930s as a "people's car" or "Volkswagen" in German, the idea was to create an affordable and practical vehicle for the German people. This concept led to the development of the Volkswagen Beetle (or the Type 1), designed by Ferdinand Porsche.
Post-War Challenges: After World War II, Volkswagen faced significant challenges. The factory was heavily damaged, and the brand's association with the Nazi regime led to a lack of interest in the car in some regions.
British Intervention - The British Army & Ivan Hirst: The British Army took control of the factory in the immediate post-war period. Major Ivan Hirst, a British Army officer, played a crucial role in reviving Volkswagen. He recognized the potential of the Beetle and advocated for its production, convincing the British military to order several thousand cars. This decision helped jumpstart the brand's revival.
Export Success and the Beetle's Global Appeal: The Beetle gained popularity not only in Germany but also globally, becoming an icon of affordable motoring. Its simple, reliable design and unique appearance made it a favorite among consumers worldwide.
Model Evolution: Over the years, Volkswagen introduced various models alongside the Beetle, each contributing to the brand's growth:
Type 2 (VW Bus or Transporter): Introduced in the 1950s, it became an iconic symbol of the hippie movement in the 1960s, loved for its spaciousness and versatility.
Golf (Rabbit in the U.S.): Launched in the mid-1970s, the Golf (or Rabbit in the U.S.) marked a shift towards front-wheel-drive, modern design, and hatchback practicality, becoming a cornerstone of the brand's success.
Passat, Jetta, and Other Models: Volkswagen expanded its lineup with models like the Passat and Jetta, catering to different market segments.
Challenges and Innovations: Despite success, Volkswagen faced challenges, including quality issues in the 1970s. However, the brand continued to innovate and develop new models and technologies.
Rise of the GTI and Global Expansion: The 1980s saw the rise of the iconic Golf GTI, a high-performance version that sparked the hot hatch trend. Volkswagen also expanded its global presence during this period.
The British intervention in reviving Volkswagen after World War II played a pivotal role in the brand's resurgence. While there might have been some tensions or competition among automotive companies in the 1950s and 1960s due to Volkswagen's post-war success, the brand's ability to produce innovative and popular models solidified its place in automotive history.
