This 1961 MGA 1600 is the quintessential British roadster that comes in a great color combo, original motor, and nicely documented. So we know you'll find this restored example irresistible even before you realize it can be had for the affordable price of a Miata.
There are a few body styles out there that make you say "Wow!" from the moment they come into view, and the MGA is in that very select class. With a later application of glossy red paint, and a panel fitment that tells you there was a nice investment in the restoration, this example really highlights the best from Britain. It has the long flowing fenders that help create the low-cut doorline, the aggressive rear fenders that kick up for the wheels, and the unmistakably smooth European trunk (boot) design – all of this combines to make for a car that looks sporty even when parked. The chrome grille and the bumpers look great on this example. Plus, all the rest of the brightwork, such as around the windshield, dual mirrors, and headlight bezels make the MGA look like it was trying to offer Americans the polished style we love (in reality, it's just bowing to its T-series history.) But unlike the earlier MGs, when the weather does turn wet, the folding roof and side curtains are much more substantial to keep you dry for the drive home. Wire wheels were an option from the factory, and it just seems like a must-have to complete the iconic appearance.
These MGs are a great lesson in purist motoring, and the interior proves it. A grippy three-spoke steering wheel, clear Jaeger gauges, and a manual transmission – those are the true essentials you need. Your senses will go into overload as you sit in the low-cut black bucket seat and gaze at the exterior-matching red dash panel. Pull the start knob and then let the wind whips through the interior while you help fill it with the wonderful soundtrack from the motor. Still, being a minimalist does not mean lacking in style. Attention is guaranteed when you park this British invasion among the big Detroit metal at car shows.
When shopping for an MGA, you want one built in the 60s. Not only is it a rarer roadster, but also because you received the larger motor. The enlargement to the 1600cc powerplant gives this a little extra kick of performance that is always welcomed in these machines.
