The Packard Motor Car Company was one of the longest-lasting of the original American independents. Founded in 1899 in Ohio by the Packard brothers and George Weiss after the latter was frustrated when his suggestions on how to improve his own Winton automobile went ignored by the company.
Packard would go on to make startling inroads amongst wealthy Americans by concentrating almost exclusively on high-end cars.
Eventually, the automaker would find a broad audience in Europe and Asia as well for its exquisitely styled and powerful vehicles. By the time the Depression hit, Packard was able to leverage its unique single assembly line system (with all cars based on the same basic platform) to ride out the economic chaos – and in fact while away the malaise by producing some of its most opulent models.
The Packard offered for sale is indicative of this unusual strategy. Featuring an inline or 'straight' eight-cylinder engine good for between 90 and 110 horsepower from its 5.4 litres of displacement, the '733' in its name denotes its overall length of 134.5 inches. This particular model could be had with and without a roof, as well as in sedan, limousine, and even seven-passenger editions, deftly illustrating the interchangeability of Packard parts on its one-platform system. A four-speed manual transmission was standard with the vehicle, alongside drum brakes at all four wheels.
The 733 was a very popular model for the brand, and the fact that Packard was able to sell just over 28,000 vehicles in 1930 – a mere one year after the stock market crash – was a minor miracle.
This striking example comes to us in overall great condition, originally built in America and most of its life has been spent in Canada.  A full restoration was undertaken in Canada during the previous owner 30 year ownership. The Brown and Cream exterior has help up in great condition, the matching roof and luggage box are showing some lovely patina, the fabric has begun to age, and in doing so has improved the appearance.
There is a Golf bag side door to the passenger side; this allows access to a generous storage compartment behind the drivers seat. There are Tiffany signatures on many features including the running board plates; these were designed by the iconic luxury company. All of the chrome around the 733 is in good condition; there is also a folding trunk rack to the rear to allow for more storage.
The back of the rumble seat has minimal wear, it would appear that it has barely used to sit on, and most likely was used for storage instead. During the restoration the interior was re-trimmed in buttoned and fluted velour, this was completed to a high standard and is still in good condition.
The matching numbers 5.4 litre, straight 8 fires instantly, and idles with ease. Driving down the road it is clear the maintenance has been to a high standard, the engine is smooth and responsive; this certainly is an excellent driving machine.
Other features include:
One shot lubrication system, going to 42 points along the chassis.
Trippe twin fog lights.
Packard hand operated spot light.
Packard “See Right” wheel mounted wing mirrors.
Door mounted wind wings with opening front screen.
Original stainless steel Packard Goddess with radiator cap.
Correct lights front and rear.
6 volt system with electric fuel pump feeding auto vac.
Jaeger 8 day clock.
This is a well sorted Packard Coupe which runs and drives amazingly, in our showroom and ready for viewing.
