This evolution continued until the current generation of 911, in parallel with the atmospheric model: switch to water-cooled, multivalve, direct injection and increasingly efficient gearboxes. The origins of the first production 911 Turbo come from the engines of the Porsche 917 Canam manufactured since 1972 with a flat-twelve. Porsche therefore presented at the 1973 Paris Motor Show a turbocharged prototype, which foreshadowed its second-generation 911 to be marketed in 1974, and at the 1974 Paris Motor Show, its final turbo version was revealed despite the first oil shock. This version is initially designed as a homologation version of the turbo engine in competition, and as such, Porsche initially plans to produce only 500 copies. But the success of the model will very quickly make them renounce any limitation of production. The engine of this 911 Turbo is, along with its looks, the main feature of the model. The 3 L 260 hp flat 6-cylinder engine (code 930/50) derives from the 2.7 L engine of the normal version, and benefits from numerous contributions from the Carrera RS 3.0. The turbocharger comes from KKK and blows a maximum of 0.8 bar. The whole delivers the remarkable power for the time of 260 hp. In 1977, Porsche revised the engine and brought it to 3.3 L and 300 hp. On the aesthetic side, some minor modifications and the spoiler is redesigned.
