Porsche 944 Lux 1985

Allmän beskrivning : Model History

The 944 was Porsche's mid range sports car positioned between the 924 and 911. It used a water-cooled four-cylinder engine mounted at the front with the gearbox mounted at the rear to provide better weight distribution; this resulted in one of the best handling cars to come out of the 1980s.

The aim of the 944 was to provide a luxurious long distance cruiser as well as an exciting and powerful road car. Its body was based on the 924 Carrera GT, and like the 924 it had a sloping glass hatchback for a more practical luggage storage area. The sunroof was a popular option as it was a removable metal panel meaning a near Targa-like open road experience.

The 944 was introduced for sale in 1982 and production ran for 10 years. It came in either a 2+2 coupe body or as an attractive cabriolet. There were several models made but it's the 2.5 Lux that is featured here.

Equipment

Sapphire Metallic paint, 16-inch Fuchs style anodised wheels, Electrically adjustable front seats, Electrically adjustable door mirrors, Electric windows, Removable electric sunroof, Front and rear mud flaps, Headlamp washers, Rear window wiper, Tinted glass, Leather steering wheel, Retractable luggage cover, Front fog lights, Cigarette lighter, Ashtray, Blaupunkt Brisbane stereo, Alarm, Spare keys.

Exterior

Finished in rare Sapphire Metallic this lovely 944 presents in fantastic condition, looking stunning with its lowered stance and deep-dish wheels. Other than a few marks to the front spoiler along with some discreet stone chips to the sills the car presents really nicely. It is not a flawless example but is extremely well preserved, remaining free from any notable dents or prominent blemishes. The paintwork is great throughout and there is no visible corrosion to note. Looking closely you’ll find the registration number still etched on all the glass.

Interior

The cabin space presents beautifully and remains entirely original aside from the addition of an aftermarket Blaupunkt head unit with Bluetooth connectivity (not pictured). The seats are in near perfect condition and show almost no signs of any wear to the bolsters or centres. The black leatherette and pinstripe cloth combination still looks marvelous by today’s standards. The carpets throughout are in excellent order, as are the door cards and dash. The boot area is also clean and is still fitted with its handy privacy blind.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The 944 is accompanied by a great service history and so it has evidently been very well looked after from new. It was most recently serviced in December 2016 at 68k miles; the timing belt was also changed at this time. On test the 2.5-litre engine pulls well and the gearbox still feels tight and precise. The engine bay is particularly clean.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The 944 sits on a striking set of Fuchs style wheels with satin black centres and handsome anodised rims. They are in excellent unmarked condition and sport the correct Porsche centre caps. The alloys are shod in a matching set of Continental tyres with ample tread remaining.

History File

The 944 was first registered in October 1985; it was supplied new by Swinford Motors. The supplying dealer went on to service the car annually for the next six years. From 1990-2004 the regular maintenance was carried out by well-regarded Porsche specialist, Two Plus Two Ltd. Given the car’s limited use in recent years the maintenance has been less consistent although recent work has been carried out to bring the car up to scratch. The car has seen just four keepers from new and the MOT does not expire until August 2019.

Present in the history file is a raft of invoices for service work and general maintenance over the years. Numerous MOT certificates are included as are the Porsche document pack, owner’s manual, and stamped service booklet. An original sales brochure accompanies the paperwork. The car has been serviced at the following mileages: 676, 3k, 6k, 9k, 12k, 16k, 18k, 21k, 24k, 27k, 30k, 34k, 39k, 44k, 47k, 54k, 56k, 67k, and most recently at 68k miles when the timing belt was also replaced.
