Volkswagen Golf Mk1 Clipper 1992

Allmän beskrivning : Model History

The Mk1 VW Golf was noteworthy for signalling Volkswagen’s shift of its major car lines from rear-wheel drive and rear-mounted air-cooled engines to front-wheel drive with front-mounted, water-cooled engines that were often transversely-mounted. Successor to the VW Beetle, the first generation Golf debuted in Europe in May 1974 with styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Italdesign.

A convertible version of the Golf was presented to Volkswagen's management by coachbuilder Wilhelm Karmann GmbH as early as 1976. The production version of the convertible Golf was designated Type 155. In Europe and Canada it was called the Golf Cabriolet, while in the United States it was sold as the Rabbit Convertible until the 1985 model year. The Cabriolet was sold from 1980 to 1994. It had a reinforced body, a transverse roll-over bar, and a high level of trim. From stamping to final assembly the Mk1 Cabriolet was built entirely at the Karmann factory. Volkswagen supplied engines, suspension, and interior trim for Karmann to install. The tops, of vinyl or cloth, were heavily insulated, with a heated glass rear window. The top was raised and lowered manually until 1991, when it became electrically-operated.

The body of the Cabriolet did not change through the entire production run except for a larger fuel tank. It kept the pre-1980 style of rear lamp clusters. A space saver spare wheel was fitted from the outset, including 1978 pre-production models, unlike the saloon which did not adopt this until 1984. All Cabriolets from 1988 on left the factory fitted with a “Clipper” bodykit that featured smooth body-coloured bumpers, wheel-arch extensions, and side skirts.

Exterior

This stunning and surely unrepeatable example has been cherished from new, and with a mere 27k miles on the clock it's also one of the cleanest Mk1 Golfs we've seen. The Alpine White paintwork appears almost entirely unmarked, with a bright and uniform shine across every panel. The bumpers, wheel arch extensions and rubbing strips are all in excellent, scuff-free condition, and the 'Clipper' decals are all present and correct. Up top, the electric-folding hood is absolutely pristine with no damage or rips to be found. With a super clean underside and the original supplying dealer number plates still fitted, this beautifully preserved example is one for a true enthusiast.

Interior

The classic Mk1 cabin appears fresh throughout. The unmarked sports seats are in first rate condition with no wear to report, even to commonly worn areas such as the driver's bolster. The pristine cloth upholstery presents with a delightful multicoloured weave on close inspection, this fabric extending to the door and side panels, again all like new. The white headlining is entirely mark-free, the dash fascia is perfect, and all controls work just as they should, including the electric-folding hood. In the front footwells the carpets are protected by a set of rubber VW overmats. Truly time warp in every respect, this magnificent example looks every bit the low mileage.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Barely run-in with only 27k miles on the clock, the Golf’s peppy 1.8 is lovely and smooth, giving excellent and reliable performance along the way. Equipped with the desirable manual gearbox this low mileage Mk1 is a thoroughly enjoyable car to drive. It was last serviced in December 2020 around 300 miles ago, and most recently boasts a full strip down and clean of the carburettor. The workshop were particularly impressed with the outstanding condition of the engine bay and underside, the car clearly having been properly garaged all its life.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Clipper sits on 15-inch 'Le Castellet' forged alloys with a lovely polished finish; they are shod in matching tyres all round, each one with at least 6mm of tread left. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition; the front discs, pads, rear drums and shoes have all been replaced within the last thousand miles or so.

History File

The fantastic little Golf was first registered in November 1992. It was supplied new by Sinclair Garages VW in Swansea and remained a one-owner car right up until 2017. It has now driven just 27k miles in the hands of only 3 registered keepers. Amazingly the original dealer window sticker and number plates are all still fitted.

Within the History File you'll find the original VW document pack complete with all owner's manuals, the stamped service booklet, a raft of invoices, past MOT certificates, and the spare key. The car was last serviced only 300 miles ago and comes freshly inspected for the new keeper's peace of mind. Brilliant parts availability, owners club support, and mechanical simplicity offer worry-free classic motoring allowing the next owner to concentrate solely on enjoyment.
