Alpina B10 B10 V8 2000

General description : Model History

The B10 V8 was based on the E39 generation 5-Series – more specifically the 540i. It was introduced in 1997 and received an engine update with the double VANOS (variable-valve timing) system in 1999. After casting a whole new block for the 4.6-litre engine that was to replace the 540i's 4.4-litre unit, Alpina constructed a new crankshaft, lighter and higher-compression Mahle pistons, and reprogrammed the Motronic system. The result was a nearly 60hp increase that was available 1,900rpm lower than standard. With the new VANOS system the B10 V8 received another 7hp and 7 lb-ft of torque.

While notably fast and sporty, the B10 V8 was at the same time relaxed and comfortable. The gearbox used was a five-speed ZF unit with a steering wheel-mounted Switch-tronic system. Other modifications by Alpina included twin-tube gas pressure shocks, new ventilated brake discs all around, new anti-roll bars, and 18-inch wheels wrapped in 235/40 Michelins at the front and 265/35 at the rear; 19-inch alloys were available at extra cost. Other exterior differences from the 540i included new front and rear spoilers and optional Alpina decals.

The example featured here is one of only 221 B10 V8 saloons produced for the UK market. Total saloon production was limited to just 854 units worldwide, with production of the Touring model capping off at only 204 units.

Exterior

This handsome B10 V8 looks great in subtle metallic silver. The lustrous paint presents to a high standard all round with only a dusting of light chips to the front spoiler, bonnet, and headlights. The body appears very straight throughout and shows no signs of rust in any of the usual E39 weak spots. The double-glazed windows are free from any de-lamination issues and the BMW/Alpina badges are in fine condition all round. An overall great example, and a rare car with just 221 produced for the UK market.

Interior

The B10’s interior is a great place to enjoy a drive, with comfortable seats and lashings of high-quality materials – even the centre console and lower dash are trimmed in leather. The sporty half-alcantara upholstery is in first rate condition with minimal wear and fully functional electric adjustments. The car still retains all its period goodies including the cassette player, telephone handset, and original sat nav display. The boot area is spotless and the carpets throughout are protected by a clean set of Alpina floor mats. The Alpina plaque can also be found stating the build number 781.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

As to be expected the engine bay is clean, tidy, and free from any signs of damage or poor repair. The service booklet shows maintenance at regular mileage intervals but in recent years the car has seen limited use to preserve its low mileage. The most recent service was carried out just a few hundred miles ago, but a fresh service and mechanical inspection will still be done prior to sale for the new keeper’s peace of mind.

Out on the road the car performs admirably, with plenty of low-down torque and that fantastic V8 soundtrack at higher revs. The five-speed switchable transmission is quick to respond, and the steering-mounted controls really add to the level of engagement.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The car sits on factory-upgraded 19-inch alloys, filling the arches perfectly. Each wheel remains in stunning curb-free condition with no age-related wear to report. The original locking centre caps are all present and correct, cleverly concealing the tyre valves within – a feature of genuine Alpina alloys only. The wheels are shod in high quality Michelin tyres, and the brakes work confidently on test.

History File

Following on from its pre-delivery check at the Alpina factory in Buchloe, Germany, this rare UK-supplied B10 V8 was first registered in June 2000. It has now driven just 86k miles in the hands of only three keepers from new. The History File is complete with the leather Alpina document wallet, a raft of maintenance invoices, MOT certificates, and the original maintenance booklet with seven service stamps.

Having just arrived with us from a private collection, the car has seen only limited use in recent years, remaining dry stored when not on the road. The most recent service was done just a few hundred miles ago in December 2018, and a fresh one will be carried out prior to sale. A full mechanical inspection will also be carried out for the new keeper’s peace of mind. The MOT is valid until March 2021.

Over the years, Alpina has developed a close partnership with BMW, and their models are sold through BMW dealerships, offering a unique blend of performance and luxury.
