BMW M3 M3 1989

General description : Model History

The E30 M3 made its debut at the 1985 Frankfurt motor show and was a BMW motorsport division development based on the E30 3-Series. The reason for the development was to allow BMW to compete in Group A touring car racing against the likes of the Mercedes 190E 2.3 16V Cosworth.

Group A rules demanded that each racecar share its main components with the production road car, hence the wide arches to accommodate race wheels and tyres. The series required a high number of units to homologate the M3 (5,000 units), so production was carried out by special teams at the normal Munich-Milbertshofe factory rather than the Motorsport unit in Garching.

While based on the E30 3-Series the M3 was a totally revised car designed and focused for use as a race car. The suspension was reworked resulting in three times more steering castor, a front anti-roll bar linked to the struts, re-valved shocks and stiffer shorter springs, a wider track and stronger wheel bearings were added to cope with intense mechanical stress of track work. The power assisted rack and pinion steering is quicker (19.6:1). All the exterior panels on the M3 apart from the bonnet and sunroof are unique to the car with the rear screen re-angled for better airflow. Both front and rear screens are bonded to the car to increase body stiffness.

Exterior

This has to be one of the cleanest, most original E30 M3s we’ve ever had the pleasure of selling here at 4 Star. Beautifully finished in sublime Cinnabar Red – surely one of the best M3 colours – the rich paintwork remains in simply stunning condition all round. Even on close inspection there are very few blemishes to speak of, the only real imperfections to report being some expected light chips towards the front end. The remainder of the body is factory-fresh with even panel gaps, pristine rubber trims, immaculate badging, and absolutely no corrosion in any of the common E30 weak spots. A true collector’s piece, in outstanding show condition.

Interior

Open the door and you’re still greeted by that new car smell. Original interiors of this age and in this condition do not come around often. The bolsters show no signs of any wear, the stunning pale Uberkaro cloth appearing almost as new throughout. Glancing across the driver-focused dash you’ll find a superb finish to every component. Everything feels reassuringly solid to operate, and everything works just as it should. Commonly worn items like the steering wheel and gear knob retain a great finish with only a few light marks to note, and the carpets are still protected in the footwells by the original tailored overmats. The boot area is extremely clean and still present with the complete BMW toolkit and alloy spare wheel.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The E30 M3’s S14 engine was designed for racing applications and was, therefore, compact and high-revving. Special features included individual throttle plates for each cylinder, machined intake and exhaust ports, and a crankshaft with eight counterweights. The engine bay of this example – an EU-spec non-cat 200ps car – is exceptionally clean throughout, it looks like new! Everything appears factory-fresh with no signs of any corrosion, damage, or wear to report. All in all, a real treat for the enthusiast.

The current owner purchased the car way back in 2001 and has cherished it ever since. Reading through accompanying the history file it’s clear that this one has always been maintained to the highest standard and, aside from one service carried out in 2000 by an independent BMW specialist, it always been serviced within of the BMW main dealer network! Out on the road it’s as tight as a drum to drive; the engine is as smooth as ever and the dogleg ‘box really is a joy to operate.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The M3 sits on a perfect, unmarked set of 16-inch cross-spoke alloy wheels, as fitted brand new at BMW in 2016. Fresh Yokohama rubber was fitted all round at the same time, the tyres having seen little over 2k miles of use since then. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition, effortlessly bringing the car to a stop quickly and in a straight line.

History File

This surely unrepeatable example in rare Cinnabar Red was first registered in June 1989. An EU-spec non-cat 200ps car, it was originally supplied in Munich, Germany, and has now driven only 74,881 miles (120,510km) from new. It remained in Germany before being brought into the UK in 1999 where it has lived a sheltered life under the same fastidious ownership since 2001. Aside from one service carried out by a specialist in 2000 the car has, quite amazingly, only ever been serviced within the BMW main dealer network (including its time in Germany). The last service was carried out at Harry Fairbairn BMW in February 2022.

Within the History File the lucky new owner will be presented with the complete and original BMW document wallet with all owner’s manuals, exactly as it was supplied to the first keeper. The original service booklet is of course on hand and is stamped up to date with the entries detailed below. Every UK MOT certificate is present, further verifying the car’s low mileage, the remainder of the paperwork comprising a thick raft of BMW invoices meticulously detailing all the work that has been carried out since its arrival in the UK.

Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
