Ferrari 330 GT 4.0L V12 1964

General description : 1964 Ferrari 330 GT Series I
s/n 6077, Engine no. 6077
Metallic Blue with Black Leather

1964 was a year of significant changes in the world around us. The Beatles arrived on The Ed Sullivan Show, the Civil Rights Act was signed into law, and the Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 debuted at the Brussels Salon. Having replaced the earlier 250 GTE 2+2, the new four-passenger design featured a more fluid upper body design with expansive side glass, thin pillar construction, and two more inches of wheelbase, all of which greatly contributed a more elegant and refined presence and offered plenty of space for a family of four. The long hood housed the venerable Colombo V12 engine mated to a 4-speed gearbox, while the tailored rear fenders and trunk allowed ample room for luggage. Remarkably, the rear seating capacity should have resulted in a taller roofline, but Pininfarina cleverly arched the C pillars downward and back, past the trailing wheel opening edge, elongating the profile. This not only visually reduced the height of the roof, the entire car appeared lower and lighter. The end result was a very handsome Gran Turismo car with taut visual tailoring - a capable athlete in a finely cut suit. Equipped with Koni adjustable shock absorbers and gradually refined tire technology, the improved handling was a welcome advance over the previous 250 GTE.

Eager to increase sales and production numbers as a means to advance racing resources, Ferrari developed the 330 to serve as a prominent brand statement with hopes for increased sales, building on their most important market, North America. In an effort to meet the trend of front fascia designs seen in many American cars, Pininfarina chose to incorporate a unique quad-headlight design. This feature not only gave the new design a strong frontal presence, it also increased the width of the front fenders, giving the car a visually wider stance; once again, a nod to the styling trends of American cars. This feature would ultimately become unique to the Series I 330 GT, as the Series II cars would retreat back to the more predictable single headlight design. Thus, with just 627 cars built to first series specifications, Series I 330 GTs remain today sought after for their purity of concept and unique visual signature.

According to leading Ferrari authority and database for numerous vintage Ferraris, barchetta.cc, this example was delivered to Garage de Montchoisy Switzerland in 1964. In 1969 the car is next recorded in Rhodesia where it reportedly remained during the county’s renaming and political shift to Zimbabwe. Though specific records for ownership during this period have yet to surface, by 1988 the car is next reported to be in Australia under the ownership of Michael Hollinshead. At this time, the colors for the car are listed as Azzurro Metallizzato with black leather interior. By 2013, the car is consigned with Oldtimer Australia, Hamilton, Australia, subsequently crossing to the UK the following year and offered for sale at the Landmark Car Company in London. In July 2017 the car is offered for sale at CNC Motors, Ontario Canada.

The current owner purchased the car approximately two years ago and has since invested considerable time and resources sorting out the mechanical systems and tending to cosmetic issues using top level Ferrari specialists for all services. Over the course of 2019, the current owner spent over $50,000.00 covering a wide range of items including brake work, fuel tank service, several electrical items corrected, various interior items addressed, and the installation of a new clutch and flywheel, new tires and tubes, and exhaust repair. Further work included a comprehensive rebuilt of the front suspension installing new wheel bearings, king pins, trunnion bushing, rubber suspension pieces, and king pin bearing housings. Also, during this time, bent spring seats were repaired, spring rubbers and anti-roll rubbers were replaced.

In September 2019, the radiator was overhauled, new bracket straps installed, and a new fan switch installed. The fuel pump was rebuilt, a new sump pump gasket installed, and a new ignition switch installed. Also, during this time, the right-side head was removed, machined, and valve work performed including new intake and exhaust valves, new valve guides, and a new cylinder head gasket. Throughout the service process, great care was made to install correctly specified components, fluids, and hardware in order to maintain or replace original factory parts as needed for this Ferrari.

Today this attractive matching numbers Series I 330 GT exhibits a very nice, cohesive driver-quality appearance with generally good quality paint showing consistent gloss throughout. The handsome blue finish has been applied with a bit more metallic flake than originally specified, though the color is very fitting for this design. Panel fit is good overall, however the passenger side door sits slightly proud of the rear fender surface, though both doors open and close properly. The hood and trunk open and shut as expected, however the left side of the trunk lid sits proud of the fender surface. It should be noted that both the hood and trunk show greater paint gauge readings from other areas on the car. This is generally indicative of previous bodywork that may have used synthetic fillers to smooth body contours in these areas. Upon closer inspection, there are some small paint blemishes noted at the front of the car that have been filled in by hand, also evident in some inner surfaces. The exterior chrome is good overall with some imperfections evident on the headlight trim, bumpers, and inner grille surround. The trim and emblems are nicely finished and detailed. The Borrani wire wheels, shod with recently installed Michelin XWX tires and tubes, display very good finish overall with triple ear knock-offs. The lighting and lenses are all very nicely preserved or restored, with excellent red and amber colors showing on the taillights. Glass and surrounding trim are in very good condition with a few road marks evident on the windshield.

The black leather interior has been properly maintained with a cohesive look and feel that combines original features and materials with properly replaced items as needed. The dashboard and instruments appear to have been properly maintained exhibiting excellent color, minor fading on a few smaller gauges, excellent clarity on the larger gauges, and high contrasting numeric indication. The wood rimmed steering wheel is handsomely hued with a warm feel to the rim and polished hub and spokes, echoing the wood dashboard which also conveys a nice lightly hued appearance. Carpeting and headliner are in generally good condition, while the door panels, and dashpad are clean and tidy. Overall the various trim, interior components, and details appear to have been tended to with thoughtful considerations toward originality, blending older replacement materials with honest patina and original features. The trunk compartment remains in good overall condition and contains a Borrani spare wire wheel and tool roll.

Under the hood, the original matching numbers 330 series engine delivers a satisfying and generally accurate visual impression, recently tended to and still showing correct finishes, proper hoses, lines, and updated fasteners, the engine and engine compartment retains pleasing cosmetics overall. While the engine compartment has not been prepared to show car level, the engine exhibits a very tidy presentation including the correct air cleaner, correctly finished cam covers, recently rebuilt radiator, and a correct diamond quilted hood insulation pad.

The car starts easily and warms up to idle smoothly, delivering a crisp V12 sound. Once seated inside, it is easy to see how the 330 GT 2+2 has become a favorite for enthusiasts who enjoy driving their cars in various events with the benefit of inviting friends and family members to occupy the spacious rear seating area. The combination of excellent visibility, comfortable seating position, ample interior room and trunk space, make it ideal for such events. Driving this 330, one quickly finds comfortable steering and rewarding performance. The gearbox is easily engaged with good synchros, and the clutch takes up smoothly when accelerating. Braking is good overall, coming down from higher speeds with good pedal pressure and responsive suspension, having benefited from the recent front suspension rebuild. The underside of the car is clean and well-tended, however, it appears as though secondary floor pans have been installed to the undercarriage. There is evidence of incremental corrosion repair in the splash areas around the inner wheel arches. Though the underside shows evidence of use, the suspension, oil pan, and brake components appear visually sound overall. The car comes with a set of tools and tool roll and selected recent service repairs, former repair estimates, and notes/emails for recommended services with the current owner.

This Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 offers an astute enthusiast a pleasant numbers-matching car with handsome driver level cosmetics, ready to enjoy and improve over time. The Series I 330 GT offers an excellent combination of power, spaciousness, and elegance, draped in stunning Pininfarina coachwork. Having been recently serviced and prepared for driving, this beautiful Ferrari is ready for the next fortunate owner to enjoy, participate in touring events, and enhance at their leisure while enjoying one of the best GT cars of the 1960s.

About Ferrari
The first Ferrari road car was the 125 S introduced in 1947 and powered by a 1.5 L V12 engine, right?
Well it's not quite that simple, Ferrari did in fact produce e Tipo 815, in 1940. Tipo 815 was designed by ex-Alfa Romeo engineers Alberto Massimino and Vittorio Bellentani and by Enrico Nardi under Enzo's company but legal issues with the former associate Alfa Romeo prevented Ferrari from launching the Ferrari marque at that point.

Enzo did produce a series of fine road cars in the 50's and 60's but they were merely to finance his true passion racing, wheather GT/Sports car or Grand Prix. The 50's saw the birth of Ferrari's most memorable cars, 250 GTB (tour de France) 250 Testa Rossa, 250 GT swb just to name a few.

Under the surface tension was growing though. In November 1961 long-time sales manager Girolamo Gardini made an ultimatum to Enzo: if tensions continued, he would leave the company. As a result, Gardini was ousted, as well as Scuderia Ferrari manager Romolo Tavoni, chief engineer Carlo Chiti, experimental sports car development chief Giotto Bizzarrini, and a number of others who stood by them.
Without Chiti and Bizzarrini the development of what was to become the most quintessential Ferrari and today the world's most expensive car, 250 GTO, was at a pivoting point. 250 GTO project was saved by a young engineer Mauro Forghieri and long-time racing bodyman Sergio Scaglietti who stepped in and took over the program with known results.

In addition to 250 GTO, Ferrari launced such master pieces as 250 LM, 250P, 275 GTB, 365 GTB/4 "Daytona" during the the 60's
By the late 60's Ferrari's prototypes' success came to a sudden halt by a new competitor, GT40. Ford turned to Lola to produce a Ferrari beating long distance racer after Enzo had cut the deal off with Henry Ford II making the latter absolutely boil with fury. The collaboration between Ford and Lola created the mighty Ford GT40 that gave Ferrari some heavy hits in Le Mans 24 to come.
By the end of the 60's FIAT purchased 50% of the company, starting a development that has led to a new mass-produced era of Ferraris.
