Honda NSX 1991

General description : Model History

The origins of the NSX trace back to 1984, with the HP-X (Honda Pininfarina eXperimental) concept, which was a mid-engine 3-litre V6 rear-wheel drive sports car. Honda committed to the project, with the intention of meeting or exceeding the performance of the then V8 engine Ferrari range, while offering reliability and a lower price point. The concept thus evolved and had its name changed to NSX, which stood for New Sportscar eXperimental.

Gordon Murray, the designer of the McLaren F1 supercar, stated that he used the NSX as the inspiration for the F1 after test driving many high-performance cars and finding the NSX chassis performed the best. Murray stated that it was “monumental” to sportscar design.

The NSX benefited from advanced aerodynamics and interior styling inspired by an F-16 fighter jet cockpit, with input from the late Formula One World Champion, Ayrton Senna, during the final development stages. It became the world's first mass-produced car to feature an all-aluminium body. It was powered by an all-aluminium 3-litre V6 engine, which featured Honda's VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) system developed in the 1980s, a 5-speed manual transmission.

Later production saw the introduction of power-assisted steering, an optional 4-speed automatic transmission, a targa-roofed variant, a larger 3.2 V6 engine, and deletion of the car’s iconic pop-up headlights. Early examples, such as the car featured here, are especially popular among purists because it was this specification of NSX (5-speed manual, non-PAS, etc.) that Ayrton Senna helped to develop.

Equipment

Formula Red / Black paintwork, Black leather upholstery, 5-speed manual transmission, 16-inch alloy wheels, OEM full length third brake light (original blacking plate included), Electrically-adjustable sports seats, Electric door mirrors, Electric windows, Leather steering wheel, Leather gear knob, Cruise control, Digital climate control air conditioning, Bose sound system, Honda cassette radio, Alpine CD changer, Numbered NSX door sill covers, Spare wheel, Complete tool kit, Original NSX overmats, Spare key and remote fob, Original NSX front-end bra, Alarm, Original document pack, Original dealer number plates, Original bill of sale.

Exterior

This simply stunning example still wears its original coat a factory paint and remains in truly remarkable condition. Only passing through the hands of three keepers, and the last two being collectors, the car has almost always been kept inside and only driven on dry days. Consistent with the low mileage there are a few light stone chips to the front end which have been carefully touched in. Looking carefully around the car all of the plastic and rubber trims are in perfect condition and none of the lights have any cracks, chips, or damage.

Interior

Inside is sure to be a delight for any NSX enthusiast as it presents in almost as new condition. The upholstery on the seats and door cards has no marks, the leather has its original satin sheen and it’s still soft to the touch. The steering wheel is free from marks and still retains its textured finish to the leather, the only signs of use being some very slight wear to the top of the gear knob and the tiniest mark on the armrest. The sun visors are still protected in their original factory plastic wrap. The carpets are all immaculate and still protected with the original NSX mats which show no sign of wear. The car has been fastidiously maintained at Honda so as you would expect everything works as it should including the ice-cold air conditioning. The rear luggage compartment is also immaculate with no marks to the carpets, still housing the original tools, dealer plates, CD changer and a very rare original Honda bonnet bra which could be fitted to the front to prevent stone chips.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Amazingly this example has always been maintained within the Honda main dealer network with a staggering 35 Honda stamps across three maintenance booklets. The last service was done in November this year and was the full cambelt service including water pump and valve clearances. The engine compartment itself is a real feast for the eyes as it looks absolutely immaculate. Due to the dry weather use, there are no signs of corrosion on any of the ancillary parts.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

Like the bodywork on the car the wheels are still in their factory finish and have never been refurbished. As mentioned, the current owner has wanted to maintain the originality of the car and so there are a few light curb marks to report on close inspection. All the tyres have just been replaced with brand new Continentals. Looking in the wheel arches you can see the aluminium suspension components which are also in their original finish and again all free from any corrosion or oxidisation.

History File

This surely unrepeatable UK-supplied example was first registered September 1991. It was originally sold through Boston Honda (Manchester) and has now driven just 38k miles in the hands of only 3 fastidious owners, the current since 2004. The car is accompanied by the most impressive maintenance record we have seen having only ever been serviced at Honda with an astonishing 35 main dealer stamps, as detailed below. The cambelt has been changed four times over the car’s life and was most recently done alongside the last full service in November 2021, the invoice for this work totaling in excess of £2,700.

The History File is complete with the original Honda document wallet with all manuals, three fully stamped service booklets, a raft of main dealer invoices, every MOT certificate dating back to 1995 and, better still, the original bill of sale from Boston Honda.

About Honda
Today, we embark on a journey through the annals of automotive history, specifically the tale of Honda cars up to the end of the 1980s. It's a story of a company with an unwavering commitment to engineering excellence and an unassuming dedication to making motoring better.

Our journey begins with the Honda N360, a petite kei car that captured the essence of post-war Japan. It was tiny, simple, and perfect for navigating crowded city streets. Honda's first foray into the car world was unassuming, but it showed their dedication to practical, efficient transportation.

Next, we meet the Honda Civic, a car that needs no introduction. It arrived on the scene in the early '70s and set the tone for the decades to come. The Civic was compact, reliable, and efficient, a car that quietly won the hearts of drivers around the world.

Moving on to the Honda Accord, a model that embraced the virtues of practicality and reliability. It was a family car that you could count on. It didn't make a fuss; it simply got the job done.

Now, let's talk about the Honda CVCC, a car that addressed the environmental concerns of the 1970s. It introduced the CVCC engine, a groundbreaking technology that reduced emissions and paved the way for cleaner, more fuel-efficient engines.

The '80s ushered in the Honda Prelude, a sporty coupe that embodied the spirit of the era. It was a car that dared to be a bit different, a bit more stylish. The Prelude was a glimpse into Honda's ability to blend practicality with a touch of sportiness.

And of course, there's the Honda CRX, a compact and agile hatchback that enthusiasts loved. It was a car that put the 'fun' in 'functional.' With its lightweight design and peppy engines, it was a hoot to drive.

Lastly, we arrive at the Honda NSX, a supercar that changed the game. It was Honda's way of saying, 'We can do extraordinary too.' The NSX was a marvel of engineering, a mid-engine masterpiece that challenged the likes of Ferrari.

So, there you have it, the story of Honda up to the end of the 1980s. It's a story of cars that didn't shout or boast but quietly went about their business, providing efficient, reliable, and well-engineered solutions for everyday life.

And as we contemplate these humble yet innovative vehicles, we're reminded that sometimes, it's the understated, well-crafted things that leave the most lasting impressions. Quite splendid, really.
