Jaguar XJS V12 6.0 Convertible 1990

General description : An impeccably restored XJS 6.0, Racing Green with Magnolia Leather.

MODEL HISTORY

The XJS was launched in 1975 and took an entirely different approach by Jaguar to the previous sports cars they produced. More a luxury Grand Touring car, the XJS was not to be a direct replacement for the legendary E-type. Based on the Jaguar XJ12 saloon's mechanicals, with a fuel-injected engine and choice of manual or automatic transmissions, at the time it was the most expensive model Jaguar had ever produced.

In 1988 the XJS Convertible was announced, replacing the Cabriolet and initially only available with the V12 engine. The Convertible project was carried out in partnership with Karmann, the German coachbuilder. Highly experienced in designing convertibles, Karmann took the standard route of stiffening the bodyshell to compensate for the loss of the roof. The new roofless XJS weighed an extra 100kg, but looked immeasurably better. The new model met with enthusiasm and by 1989, it was accounting for 57 percent of all XJS sales.

The XJS was discontinued in 1996 after 21 years in production and was replaced by the Jaguar XK8.

Equipment

Twin headlamps, Rear spoiler, Air conditioning, Heated electric seats, Electric folding roof in black, Electric windows, Electric door mirrors, Front fog lamps, Nardi steering wheel (fitted), Original steering wheel (present), Kenwood radio/cassette, Lockable rear stowage compartment, Glove compartment with vanity mirror, Cigarette lighter, Ashtrays, Immobiliser, Spare wheel, Tool kit.

EXTERIOR

This immaculate XJS has been subject to an extensive and detailed restoration. The fresh Racing Green paintwork is wonderful throughout and presents with a near-flawless finish; the underside is notably immaculate too. There are no scrapes or scratches to either bumper, and all brightwork retains an impeccable mirror shine. The electric folding soft-top is also new and operates just as it should.

INTERIOR

The beautifully appointed interior is newly upholstered in supple magnolia leather. The unmarked seats are piped in dark green and present with absolutely no wear. There are no signs of age to the walnut veneer or switchgear, and the carpets throughout are perfect. An attractive Nardi leather steering wheel has been fitted but can be easily replaced with the original should the new keeper wish.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Equipped with a fully rebuilt six-litre V12 the engine bay is in pristine condition. Since restoration completed the engine has covered little over 1,600 miles. Accordingly the under-bonnet area retains a perfect appearance, with absolutely no signs of wear or corrosion to speak of. The pristine V12 is mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox. The engine pulls effortlessly through the rev range and the gear changes are silky-smooth.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The XJS sits on a new set of cross-spoke alloys, each finished with a gleaming polished rim. They are shod in a matching set of Dunlop tyres with only the lightest of wear to speak of. New calipers, discs, and pads were fitted all round only a few hundred miles ago.

HISTORY FILE

The XJS was first registered on 24th April 1990, and was supplied new three days later by Grange Motors Welwyn, Hertfordshire. The car remained in constant use until the early ‘00s, and was regularly serviced at least once a year right up until 2002; there are seventeen stamps in the original service booklet.

SORN documentation shows the XJS to have been taken off the road in subsequent years. During this time it was painstakingly restored. The car then remained on display in an Isle of Wight showroom until it was purchased by the current keeper in 2015. Further re-commissioning was then undertaken by a notable Jaguar specialist to bring this stunning vehicle perfectly up to scratch.

Present in the history file is the original Jaguar document wallet complete with the owner's manual and stamped service booklet. A supplementary wallet contains a handful of MOT certificates and tax discs. The paperwork is complete with various invoices, SORN documentation, and the V5C.

About Jaguar XJS
The Jaguar XJS is a grand tourer produced by Jaguar from 1975 to 1996. It was designed as a replacement for the popular Jaguar E-Type, but instead of a sleek sports car, the XJS was a more luxurious and refined grand tourer.

Initially, the XJS was powered by a 5.3-liter V12 engine that produced up to 295 horsepower, giving it impressive performance for a car of its size and weight. Later versions of the XJS also offered a six-cylinder engine option, as well as a supercharged V6 engine.

The XJS featured a distinctive design that was updated over the years, with notable changes including the addition of a convertible model and the introduction of a four-seat option. It also offered a number of luxurious features, such as leather seats, wood trim, and air conditioning.

Despite its luxury focus, the XJS was also a capable performance car, with notable wins in the European Touring Car Championship and the Australian Touring Car Championship. It also served as the basis for the Jaguar XJR-15, a limited-production supercar.

Today, the Jaguar XJS is a popular classic car, with enthusiasts drawn to its distinctive design and impressive performance. Its luxurious features and refined ride also make it a popular choice among collectors looking for a comfortable and stylish grand tourer.
