The Ferrari 330 GTC was revealed to an enthusiastic public in 1966 at the Geneva Auto Show, with the GTS arriving shortly thereafter when revealed at the Paris Motor Show. Both cars were immediately heralded as among the most refined road machines Ferrari had ever produced, offering driving characteristics, composure, and performance substantially ahead of contemporary sports cars of the period. The engine was part of the ongoing development of the venerable Colombo V12, with wider bore spacing, displacing 4.0 liters, and generating 300hp. A torque tube connected the engine to the rear-mounted transaxle, optimizing weight distribution much like current high-performance cars do today. Both the 330 GTC and GTS utilized Girling ventilated disc brakes all round, independent front and rear suspension, and a 5-speed rear mounted transaxle, resulting in exceptionally good road holding, performance, and reliable road use, even in daily traffic.

The elegant and clean body design was taut and refined, while comfort amenities included air conditioning and electric windows, bolstering their sophistication as road cars. Becker or Blaupunkt radios were optional, as were wire wheels. 598 330 GTCs were constructed between 1966 and 1968, but it would ultimately be the GTS that would become the most sought after of this remarkable series. With the roof removed and the structure fortified, the GTS was a delightfully taut and elegant design in spider configuration. The delicately trailing rear body lines were the perfect shapes to inspire the open configuration. With a mere 99 examples built, the 330 GTS continues to be selected by the most astute collectors seeking a rare and important icon of Ferrari history that can be driven with ease and enjoyment, making the Ferrari GTS the perfect choice for virtually and major concours or driving events.

This meticulously restored matching-numbers 330 GTS has a well-documented history supported by copies of Ferrari factory Build sheets, Ferrari Classiche Red Book, and a 2019 Marcel Massini report. According to the accompanying records, the chassis was sent to Carrozzeria Pininfarina, Torino, Italy on April 19, 1967. Engine type 209/66 with internal number 2480 was assembled June 8, 1967 and sent the next day, June 9, 1967, to the dyno test room for testing. On June 21,1967, the finished car, painted white with black leather interior, was assigned the completion date and, although factory notes indicate delivery was to have been to an official dealer in Vienna, Austria, the car was dispatched to US importer Luigi Chinetti of Chinetti Motors, Greenwich, CT. From 1980-1983, the car was listed in the Ferrari Owners Club, USA membership directory with ownership attributed to Rug Cunningham, owner of a BMW and Maserati dealership in El Cajon, CA. On March 6, 1988 the car was listed for sale in the LA Times by San Diego, CA dealer California Sports Car Company of San Diego. The ad describes the car as dark red with black interior. On August 19, 1988 the car was sold at the Rick Cole Sports Car Auction in Monterey, CA. Showing 80,000 kms, the car was reportedly sold to a customer in Europe.

In 1994 the car is purchased and subsequently restored by the owner at that time, Benjamin F. Bailar, a Lake Forest, IL resident with the distinction of being the 64th United States Postmaster General. Having dutifully saved his stamps, Bailar ships the car to Milan, Italy and commissions an extensive mechanical and cosmetic restoration performed by a cadre of Ferrari specialists at Carrozzeria Auto Sport s.r.l. in Modena, Italy. Before departure, the transaxle is rebuilt by Nereo Iori, the chief racing mechanic for Chinetti’s NART, while Paolo Viccari, a former NART mechanic coordinates the restoration project while in Italy. During this time, the engine was rebuilt, suspension, brakes, and cooling system were restored and reassembled at Gianni Regiani’s shop by Paolo Viccari. With all mechanical components removed, the body was delivered to Bachelli & Villa, owners of Carrozzeria Auto Sport where it was stripped to bare metal and repainted, while the entire interior was prepared by Lupi in Modena and installed at Carrozzeria Auto Sport. Detailed receipts dated from 1999 show numerous components and significant expense from this restoration period.

Bailar owned the car until 2004, when it was sold to Andrew A. Levinson, a resident of Greenwhich, CT. Levinson retained the car until it was sold to the most recent owners in 2008. In 2010 the current owners commissioned John Baglioli’s Forza Motors in Monterey, CA to freshen the mechanical work and repaint the car. As work progressed, the owner decided to pursue a higher level of finish and comprehensive restoration to the highest standards. Both the owner and Forza were meticulous about the restoration requirements and attention to detail, with the owner personally suggesting the Fly Yellow paint used during the bare metal respray. Photographs documenting the restoration efforts at this time show the quality of workmanship and care put into this GTS. Upon completion, the car was shown in 2011 at The Quail in Carmel, CA and displayed at several other prestigious events including The Quail and Casa Ferrari in 2016. In 2013, the car received a Platinum Award at the National Ferrari Concours in Palm Springs, CA. Attributing deductions to fasteners and screws, the judge’s noted on the score sheet “A solid Platinum with minor small details to address.” Among the many events this spectacular Ferrari was invited to attend, in 2017, this GTS was displayed at the Ferrari 70th Anniversary at Casa Ferrari, Pebble Beach, CA, appropriately featured among some of the most coveted Ferraris in the world.

Today this exceptional Classiche Certified Ferrari 330 GTS offers not only a stunning presentation and correct restoration, it also retains the original engine, original gearbox, and beautifully crafted Pininfarina coachwork. The Fly Yellow paint is vivid and smooth showing a deep luster throughout the body, with exceptional finish on both the exterior and inner strike surfaces. There are no blemishes to significantly detract from the car’s captivating presence. The chrome is exquisite with excellent finish on the bumpers and proper polish to the headlight rings, side mirror, window trims, and door handles. Of particular note is the beautifully finished aluminum grille, chrome grille surround, and sculpted center emblem. Glass and lighting are all in excellent condition throughout, with no evidence of delamination or chips on the windscreen. The black soft top is easily raised and lowered and fits properly to the windshield and can be smoothly stowed under the top boot. The “Route Borrani” wire wheels are properly polished and virtually unmarked around the perimeter and inner rims, presenting with correct spokes and proper luster to the aluminum finish. All four wheels are fit with period correct Michelin XWX tires, which appear essentially as new. The trunk houses a matching Borrani spare wheel and Michelin spare tire. Of particular note are the correctly angled and properly extended quad ANSA exhaust tips, delightfully finishing the distinctive rear of this beautiful GTS.

The interior continues the remarkable beauty and composure displayed on the exterior with excellent finishes, materials, and meticulous attention to detail. The leather seats are perfectly padded, with correctly trimmed piping and pleats, showing just the right amount of sheen to the leather, softened from mild enjoyment. The exceptional fit and finish on the inner door panels, center console, top boot and the top of the dashboard display a cohesive interior, accented by warm wood tones on the dashboard and steering wheel. The gorgeous high contrasting instruments, and beautifully finished wood and aluminum steering wheel complete an iconic picture of Italian Sportscar motoring. Throughout the interior, delightful emblems, trim, and detailing come together in exceptional harmony. From the cloisonné “Irvin” seatbelt clasp emblem to the ashtray, each of which are so often scuffed or marred from use, are handsomely adorned with vivid color and polish. Doorsills, correct black low weave carpeting with proper foot mats, and interior kick panels further embody the attention to detail, fit and finish that has gone into this restoration. The trunk compartment has been tastefully and correctly carpeted with very nice side panels and authentic floor carpeting, housing a correct spare tire, nestled in the original spare tire tub.

Under the hood, the theme of excellence and expert detailing continues with the engine and engine compartment displaying correctly finished components and hardware. The multi-carbureted engine is capped wtih the correct air cleaner and spin-nuts, hoses, proper fasteners, and correctly applied hardware. The engine area is detailed to a high level of finish, including the correctly tufted silver hood insulation pad, wire wound yellow lines, red capped battery, correctly plumbed hoses, and remarkably fine indication plates. All numbers are noted in the Classiche book to be correct. The underside of the car is clean and dry, displaying proper finishes components, factory style exhaust and mufflers, correct suspension, and ventilated disc brakes. The condition of the chassis is excellent with no evidence of structural compromise or abuse and excellent detailing, matching the superlative levels of excellence exhibited throughout the exterior. Ferrari Classiche photos document much of the suspension and brakes to a high level of detail. Having been tended to by experts both in the US and Italy, one can truly appreciate the attention to detail and authenticity in this fine GTS.

The car starts easily and settles into a smooth, distinctive V12 idle. There is simply no comparison to the sound of a V12 Ferrari. In the spider configuration, one can truly enjoy the Ansa sounds, delivering a hypnotic idle, coaxing you to unleash the GTS’s capability at speed. Throttle response is spot on with composed progressive acceleration in every gear. Delightful revs climb eagerly as the road opens up through the expansive windscreen. The clutch and brakes operate in harmony with the gearbox delivering smooth shifts and easy engagement in each gear. Driving is stimulating yet balanced, pulling smoothly to highway speeds, showing excellent oil pressure and correct running temperatures even when under general driving conditions. The car performs just as reported by period reviews and validated by decades of ongoing appreciation from numerous GTS enthusiasts and owners who continue to call the GTS one of the finest Ferrari road cars of the classic era.
