Allmän beskrivning : Model History

The E28 was the second generation of 5-Series – replacing the E12 – and was produced from 1981 to 1988. It was the first 5-Series to feature the option of anti-lock brakes (ABS) and to have the centre console angled towards the driver. The E28 was initially produced with four and six-cylinder petrol engines, but with the introduction of the 524td in 1983, it was also the first BMW to be powered by a diesel engine.

The 525e, known as 528e in North America and Japan, used a 2.7-litre 6-cylinder M20 petrol engine that was optimised for fuel economy and torque at low engine speed, rather than the traditional high revving characteristics of the BMW straight-six. The ‘e’ meant economy, and according to BMW the 525e was more fuel efficient than the 520i, which had the same power output of 123hp.

In the UK market the model was offered only as an automatic, using a special version of the ZF 4HP22 gearbox, with a torque converter which locked up at 55mph. A tall final drive was used to take advantage of the torquey engine, giving nearly 34mph per 1,000rpm – or 100mph at just 2,950rpm. The result was commendably economical with the potential for nearly 40mpg on a run.

Exterior

The classic lines of the E28 lend themselves perfectly to period colours like Bronzit Beige, and on this example the paint presents in great order with a lustful shine throughout. Its shark nose is almost completely free of any stone chips, the panels are nice and straight along both sides, and there are no signs of corrosion in any of the common E28 weak spots. All in all, an excellent and very usable example sure to draw admiring glances out on the road.

Interior

The interior of this 525e is a delight, smelling just like a well cared for ‘80s BMW should. But what makes this particular example so special are the rare and desirable factory-fitted sports seats in lovely houndstooth cloth – a real treat for the enthusiast. The Nutria upholstery has worn really well over the years, and aside from only one very small area on the driver’s bolster, it remains showing only light use throughout.

Having clearly been garaged for most of its life there are no cracks to be found on the dash, which is normally very common in BMWs of this era. The headlining is also perfect, and all the electrics work just as they should – even a period Kenwood head unit is still present, as fitted circa 1989. At the rear of the car the seats appear almost unused, and the boot area is also nice and tidy.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

With 107k miles on the clock she may not be the lowest mileage E28 available but rest assured this 525e runs like a dream, really inspiring the driver with confidence. It performs beautifully on test and still returns excellent fuel economy along the way. The car is accompanied by a superb maintenance record from new, and since arriving with us it has been fully inspected with a fresh service carried out for the new keeper’s peace of mind.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

This 525e sits on 15-inch cross-spoke alloys, each one in excellent condition with only light patina to report. The tyres have plenty of tread remaining front and rear, and the brakes are also in great shape having just been checked.

History File

The E28 was first registered in August 1986 and was supplied new by Milcars BMW, Stanmore. It has now driven 107k miles in the hands of only two keepers. The car is accompanied by a comprehensive maintenance record, with 9 BMW stamps in the original service booklet plus a raft of invoices detailing the 20 subsequent services carried out. There are plenty of invoices for additional works in between along with MOT certificates dating back to 1998. Since arriving at 4 Star the car has been fully inspected and freshly serviced for the new keeper’s peace of mind. The MOT is valid until February 2021.

Bayerische Motoren Werke, allmänt känt som BMW, har en rik historia som sträcker sig tillbaka till grundandet 1916. Ursprungligen etablerat som en flygmotortillverkare under första världskriget, ställdes BMW inför restriktioner när det gällde flygplansproduktion efter kriget.
