BMW Z3 1999

General description : Model History

The M Coupe was first unveiled at the 1997 Frankfurt motor show. As the M-developed version of the Z3 coupe it sported one of three 24-valve six-cylinder engines originally developed by the BMW M Division for the E36/E46 M3. It also had an M-tuned chassis and several unique cosmetic parts including a more aggressive front with brake cooling ducts in place of fog lights, unique side vents with the M logo, curved M door mirrors, a lower rear bumper with four exposed exhaust tips, and a repositioned rear number plate.

The first M Coupes, with engines from the E36 M3, were built from June 2000 with the S50 engine in both LHD and RHD, and with the S52 engine in LHD only. After having been discontinued for more than six months, a revised M Coupe entered production in February 2001.

The interior of the M Coupe featured several unique items that included a chrome-ringed instrument cluster with red needles and an M logo on the tachometer, three auxiliary gauges in the centre console, heated sport seats with special pleated leather trim, a 375mm three-spoke M steering wheel with tri-color stitching and colour-matched accents, an illuminated M leather shift knob with the M logo on the shift pattern, an oval-shaped rear-view mirror, Nappa leather door pulls and centre console trim, chrome interior door handles, and door sill plates with the ‘M’ logo.

Depending on the market and production date, factory options for the M Coupe included side airbags, headlight washers, electric front seats, cruise control, rear partition net and load cover, electric sliding sunroof, various radios, and a Harmon/Kardon audio system.

Interior

The heated sports seats are upholstered in supple black Nappa leather, all presenting in fantastic shine-free condition. There’s no marking to any of the gauges or switchgear, and even the driver’s seat bolster is without any significant wear. The immaculate carpets are still protected in the footwells by original velour overmats, and in the boot you’ll find the retractable load cover and dog guard both present. Pleasingly the factory BMW cassette radio is still fitted, this example also boasting the desirable Harman Kardon HiFi upgrade from new.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The 3.2-litre S50 straight six is a fine powerplant indeed, producing an impressive 321hp at 7,400 rpm and 258 lb/ft of torque at 3,250 rpm. Its raspy exhaust note is intoxicating at high revs and the slick manual gearbox is a perfect accompaniment. The engine bay of this example appears in fine condition following inspection, with no signs of any damage or poor repair. The car also boasts a great service history, with 11 stamps in the original booklet to include the running-in check done at 1,314 miles; the most recent service was carried out in February 2019 less than 2k miles ago.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The 17-inch dished alloys present immaculately having been refurbished to a high standard in recent years. The unmarked wheels are shod in high quality tyres all round, with 225/45 R17 Michelin Pilot Sports at the front and 245/40 R17 Continentals at the rear. Out on the road the brakes perform well, stopping the car with ease quickly and in a straight line.

This low mileage M Coupe was first registered in September 2000. It has now driven just 63k miles from new and is accompanied by a great service history, with all 11 stamps present in the original maintenance booklet. About BMW

ChatGPT
Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
