Exterior

The special order Sea Blue Metallic paintwork on this final-facelift V6 R129 presents nicely all round with no major scratches, scrapes or dents. Both sides of the car remain perfectly straight and the bumpers are without any unsightly damage. All the lights are clear and moisture-free, the dark blue soft-top is unworn with no discolouration to the rear windows, and the desirable panoramic hardtop – a very nice option from new – is also perfectly presented.

Interior

The heated and electrically-adjustable seats are trimmed in special Saffron Nappa leather showing very few signs of use. On closer inspection the upholstery is still notably supple with a deep and uniform colour throughout having never required any repairs or re-connolisation. The carpets present in the same lovely hue and are well protected in the footwells by a set of Mercedes mats also in Saffron. The cabin is lifted further with lashings of glossy burr walnut trim extending from the centre console to the steering wheel and door cards.

The SL boasts an excellent specification with a great level of equipment. Modern refinements include cruise control, ice cold automatic air conditioning, electric folding door mirrors, a CD player, automatic rollover bar, and an electrically-adjustable steering column.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The engine bay of this example appears in superb original condition. The 3.2-litre V6 idles up to temperature without fuss and pulls smoothly through each gear. The car is accompanied by an excellent service history with a remarkable 14 entries in the original maintenance booklet. The last service included a brake fluid change and was carried out in May 2021 at 54,614 miles. Since arriving at 4 Star we have had the car fully inspected and MOT’d prior to sale for the new keeper’s peace of mind.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Mercedes sits on the original set of 17-inch Albali alloy wheels finished in brilliant silver. There are no signs of any curb marking or lacquer damage to report, and they are shod in a matching set of premium Michelin tyres with plenty of tread left. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition, bringing the car to a halt quickly and in a straight line.

History File

This lovely example in special order Sea Blue Metallic with Saffron Nappa leather was first registered in March 1999; it has now driven just 55k miles from new. Within the History File you’ll find the original maintenance booklet fully stamped with 15 entries in total, as detailed below. For the first 10 years of its life the SL was looked after solely by the supplying dealer, Mercedes-Benz of Giffnock. More recently it has been cared for by a mixture of specialists, the last service having been carried out in May this year less than 1,200 miles ago. A fresh mechanical inspection and MOT have only recently been carried out with a clean bill of health given in both cases.
