Porsche 911 / 964 Targa Sport 1989

Allgemeine Beschreibung : Model History

The replacement for the 911 SC came in 1984 with the arrival of the 3.2 Carrera, reviving the Carrera name for the first time since 1977. This was the last iteration of the original 911 series, with all subsequent models featuring new body styling along with new brake, electronic, and suspension technologies.

The 911 Carrera featured a new higher-displacement engine; a 3.2-litre horizontally opposed “boxer” flat six, which Porsche claimed was 80% new. The displacement of 3164cc was achieved using the 95mm bore (from the previous SC model) combined with the 1978 Turbo 3.3 crankshaft's 74.4mm stroke. In addition, higher domed pistons increased the compression ratio from 9.8 to 10.3:1. New inlet manifold and exhaust systems were also fitted.

The SC’s 915 transmission was carried over until 1987 when the Carrera got a new five-speed gearbox sourced from Getrag, model number G50, with a hydraulically operated clutch. The brake discs were increased in size to aid in more effective heat dissipation, and improved oil-fed chain tensioners were fitted to the engine. To improve oil cooling, a finned cooler replaced the serpentine lines in the front passenger fender well. This was further improved in 1987, with the addition of a thermostatically controlled fan.

Driving refinement and engine reliability were improved with an upgrade of the fuel and ignition control components to an L-Jetronic with Bosch Motronics 2 DME (Digital Motor Electronics system). An improvement in fuel-efficiency was due to the DME providing a petrol cut-off on the overrun. Changes in the fuel map and chip programming from October 1986 further improved the power to 217hp for North American delivered cars as well as for other markets mandating low emissions, like Germany.

Three basic models were available: the Coupe, Targa, and Cabriolet. Externally the Carrera was almost indistinguishable from the SC, the only real clue being the front fog lights that were integrated into the front valance. Only cosmetic changes were made during the production of the 3.2 Carrera, with a redesigned dash featuring larger air conditioning vents appearing in 1986.

The Sport variant, as featured here, had upgrades to the shock absorbers and aerodynamic spoilers front and rear. The standard UK specification was quite extensive but more extras could be added from the optional equipment list. It also included safety features such as a safety steering column, dual-circuit braking with discs all round, and deformable body contours.

Equipment

UK-supplied right-hand drive (C16) with Sport Pack, 5-speed G50 gearbox, Removable Targa roof panel, Fuchs alloy wheels, Bumpers with impact absorbers (058), Three-point rear seat belts (335), Rear window wiper (425), 8-way electrically adjustable front seats (437/438), Front and rear spoilers (473), Bilstein sports shock absorbers (474), HiFi sound system (490) with Amplifier (494), Carpeted luggage compartment (975), CD player, Audio cassette storage, Front fog lights, Space saver spare wheel, Spare key.

Exterior

Black with black is an excellent combo for any sports car but looks particularly tasty on the G-Series 911 featured here. The bodywork remains to a great standard all over, with the colour-matched roll bar a nice finishing touch. As one of the desirable UK Sport models this Carrera boasts a front lip spoiler and whale tail at the rear for a more commanding presence. The Targa roof panel remains in fine condition having been re-covered in recent years, and all items of trim still appear in great shape.

Interior

The classic 911 cabin presents really well throughout, the seats still looking great in their unmarked pinstripe cloth. The driver’s bolster is showing minimal wear and commonly worn items such as the steering wheel and gear knob appear in fine order too. The interior is pleasingly original aside from the addition of an aftermarket CD player. Despite its period aesthetic the cabin is well equipped with features such as electric windows, electrically adjustable door mirrors, and 8-way electrically adjustable sports seats for maximum comfort with minimal fuss.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The 3.2-litre flat-six starts first turn of the key and idles up to temperature without fuss. The engine bay is nice and tidy, the car having been well maintained from new with eighteen stamps in the original service booklet. The most recent service was carried out at 98,123 miles in May 2018; this was done at Porsche Centre Brooklands. As a 1989 Carrera this example is equipped with the superb five-speed Getrag G50 gearbox. The clutch was replaced at 89k miles.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

Filling those voluptuous arches are the factory Fuchs alloys. The polished rims present in great original condition showing only light age-related marking on close inspection. The wheels are finished with the correct black Porsche centre caps and are shod in Bridgestone S02 tyres at the front with Pirelli P6000s at the rear.

History File

The Targa Sport was sold new through AFN Porsche and first registered in August 1989. There is a good amount of paperwork to accompany the car including a raft of maintenance and parts invoices, plenty of MOT certificates, and the dealer-supplied Porsche document pack. The original service booklet is stamped at the following mileages: 1k, 11k, 25k, 37k, 48k, 54k, 64k, 73k, 83k, 86k, 88k, 90k, 92k, 94k, 95k, 97k, 97k, and most recently at 98k miles in May 2018. The MOT is valid until June 2019.
