Porsche 911 / 964 Carrera 4 1990

Allgemeine Beschreibung : Model History
964 was the internal name for Porsche 911s manufactured and sold between 1989 and 1994. Designed by Benjamin Dimson in 1986, the 964 featured significant styling revisions over previous 911 models, most prominently the more integrated bumpers. This generation of 911 was considered to be more than 85% new as compared to its predecessor, the Carrera 3.2. The first 964s available in 1989 were all-wheel-drive ‘Carrera 4’ models, with the rear wheel drive Carrera 2 variant added to the range in 1990.

A new naturally aspirated engine called the M64 was used for 964 models, with a flat-6 displacement of 3.6-litres. Porsche substantially revised the suspension, replacing the rear torsion bars with coil springs and shock absorbers. Power steering and ABS brakes were added to the 911 for the first time; both were standard. The exterior bumpers and fog lamps became flush into the car, allowing for better aerodynamics. Furthermore, a new electric rear spoiler rose up at speeds above 50mph and lowered down flush with the rear engine lid at lower speeds, or at rest. A new automatic climate control system provided superior heating and cooling. Revised instrumentation housed a large set of warning lights that were tied into the car's central warning system, alerting the driver to a possible problem or malfunction.

Equipment

UK-supplied right-hand drive (C16), Midnight Blue Metallic paintwork, Light Grey leather upholstery with Cobalt Blue piping, Front Sports seats with electronic height adjustment, 5-speed manual transmission, Climate control, Electric sunroof, Electric windows, Electric door mirrors, Blaupunkt Symphony cassette radio, Amplifier, Rear wiper, Graduated top tint windscreen, Porsche overmats, Space saver spare wheel, Spare key.

Exterior

The Midnight Blue paintwork on this UK-supplied 964 presents exceptionally well following a full machine polish by our in-house detailer – our studio photos really don’t do it justice. Retaining a deep glassy shine throughout, the bodywork is free from any major scratches or unsightly car park dings, and at the front end there’s barely a stone chip in sight. All trims and seals remain in fine condition, and the lights are clear all round with only one small crack in the rear reflector to report. A superb example in a lovely colour combo, ready to be driven and enjoyed.

Interior

The body-hugging sports seats remain incredibly supportive and are free from any signs of major wear, even to the deep bolsters which in this case hint at only light use – certainly not what you might expect for 107k miles. Airy light grey leather extends to the door cards and gear lever, again all in outstanding condition. The cabin is lifted further with contrasting blue leather adorning the dash and steering wheel, which also happens to retain a lovely textured finish. Another nice touch is the original Blaupunkt Symphony cassette radio that’s still present having never been swapped out for an aftermarket upgrade. All the switchgear operates just as it should, including the electric sunroof and front seat height adjusters, and the car is further equipped with the factory climate control AC option. The rear seats and carpets are immaculate, and the under-bonnet compartment is also really tidy.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The engine bay is very well presented, remaining in excellent original condition throughout with no signs of any damage or previous poor repair. At the current mileage the car has been fully inspected and freshly serviced for the new keeper’s peace of mind. This work was carried out by our trusted 911 specialist, Purely9, and included a full service and gearbox oil change with all new end casing seals and gaskets – the invoice for this totalling just shy of £1,500. The accompanying service booklet is stamped with 13 additional service entries, 11 of which are from Porsche main dealers.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The 911 sits on its original ‘Design 90’ alloy wheels, all in perfect unmarked condition. They are shod in matching Continental tyres, each one with ample tread remaining. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition. In August 2021 the car was treated to new front brake discs and pads, a brake fluid change, and a new brake booster pressure sensor.

History File

This beautiful example was supplied new by Chariots Porsche, St. Albans, in November 1990. It has now driven 107k miles in the hands of only 2 owners from new. The car is accompanied by a great History File, with all owners manuals still present in the original Porsche document wallet. The paperwork is complete with a raft of invoices, including the original bill of sale from Chariots Porsche. The service history is detailed below:
