BMW 320 318i Cabriolet 1991

General description : Model History

Brought to the market as an entry-level luxury car, the E30 chassis spanned twelve years of production. Replacing the E21 in 1982 and overlapping its successor, the E36 (introduced in 1990), by four years.

Early models featured the 4-pot M10 and straight-6 M20 engines used in the E21. The major update for the E30 took place in 1987 where the M20 engine was fitted with Bosch Motronic injection and the M10 was replaced by the M40 engine, again utilising Motronic. The chrome bumpers were also replaced with black or coloured ones in late 1989, with the rear light clusters also made slightly bigger during this minor facelift. E30s are now referred to as pre-facelift (chrome bumpers) or facelift (plastic bumpers).

The E30 boasted a spacious cabin and a light curb weight. This was due to the suspension design that utilised Macpherson front struts and rear semi trailing arms. It was also the first 3-Series to receive a service light indicator and warning light. The 325i convertible was the first drop-top solely built by BMW, with early E30s being converted by Baur, a coachbuilder located in Stuttgart. To strengthen the chassis and reduce scuttle shake BMW added plates to the front suspension turrets and built in chassis beams down the length of the car, which helped to reduce flex or twist in the chassis after removing the metal roof.

Equipment

Brilliant Red paintwork, Grey chequered cloth upholstery, Folding soft-top in black, 14-inch “bottle top” alloy wheels, Electric windows, Electrically-adjustable door mirrors, Dash clock, CD player, Spare wheel, BMW toolkit.

Exterior

The Brilliant Red paintwork has a deep, lustful shine and along both sides the car is arrow-straight, with no unsightly parking dents or scratches to report. There is no sign of corrosion in any of the usual E30 weak spots such as the wheel arches or scuttle panel, the only real imperfections to note being a handful of light stone chips at the front end. All of the glass and lights are free from chips, and the hood is in excellent order with no damage to the rear window. The car is also great underneath having been professionally undersealed back in 2012 as a precautionary measure. An exquisite low mileage example, ready to be driven and enjoyed.

Interior

The Recaro seats are in first-rate condition with unmarked chequered cloth showing absolutely no wear to the bolsters. A pristine finish can be found throughout the cabin including to the centre console and dash, all presenting without any sun damage or marking. Pleasingly all the switchgear works just as it should and there are hardly any signs of use to the pedals, steering wheel, or gear knob. The boot area is also in fine condition with a complete tool kit and spare wheel.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The engine fires into life on the first turn of the key and idles smoothly up to temperature. Lifting the bonnet reveals a wonderfully clean engine bay. Many components are still protected by the factory BMW wax and thus are free from corrosion. There are also no signs of any rust to the inner wings or chassis rails.

With a peppy 1.8 and silken 5-speed gearbox, this little E30 really is a perfect summer cruiser. It has been very well looked after and is mechanically excellent having been correctly maintained from new. The cambelt was most recently replaced just 100 miles ago and a fresh oil service will be carried out prior to sale.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The original “bottle top” alloys are in excellent condition having been fully refurbished and fitted with new centre badges since our photos were taken. The tyres have also been replaced with a matching set, all showing at least 7mm of tread. The front pads and discs were changed at 61,034 miles.

History File

This cracking E30 cabrio is accompanied by a great BMW service history. The original maintenance booklet is stamped up to 59k miles with all eleven entries being Main Dealer. The cambelt was most recently changed at 61,271 miles and we’ll be having the car freshly serviced prior to sale for the new keeper’s piece of mind. The paperwork is complete with plenty of invoices, MOT certificates, and the original BMW document pack with all manuals. The MOT is valid until May 2020.

ChatGPT
Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
